In 1987 there were 127 scholarships awarded by August of 1987. The program for 1988 was delayed for approximately 5 months which caused a significant decline in the number of scholarships awarded ( 89 scholarships) during the summer of 1988. Due to actions beyond the control of MCM, it was necessary to discontinue the EGP in August, 1988.
For the school year
(1995-96), the EGP was revised to provide a $1,000 scholarship for each
county and Baltimore City, to be awarded at Commencement ceremonies during May
and June of 1996. There were a total of 23 scholarships awarded at that
time. This newer program was more enthusiastically received. Consequently,
the Board of Directors approved the same program for the next school year
(1996-97). This program has now grown to a point where there are now two $1,000
scholarships being awarded for each County and Baltimore City.

Educational Grant Program Operating Procedures
Your lodge is requested to establish a Lodge Educational Grant Committee (EGC), which is composed of:
Worshipful Master
Senior Warden
Junior Warden
Past Master
Master Mason
If your lodge has a member involved with the local school system, you may wish to have him as a member or advisor to the Lodge EGC.
The enclosed posters and applications are to be presented to the principal of your assigned Maryland public school(s) with a proper explanation of the Educational Grant Program. If the guidance counselor is to be in charge of the School EGC, then ask to meet with that individual so you may explain the program to that person.
Our preference is to have the school principal, assistant principal and guidance counselor act as an evaluation panel for the applications. After thorough review by this panel they are to be ranked in 1,2,3 order and returned to the Lodge EGC. It is important that all applications be returned to the Lodge EGC for their review.
After review by the Lodge EGC, the applications from all schools are to be ranked in a 1,2,3 order based on selection and returned to the MCM EGC for final review and selection of the recipients. Sometimes there are extenuating circumstances that warrant a change in the Lodge EGC decision and the choice of the MCM EGC will be final. No lodge is guaranteed any applicant receiving a scholarship award.
In order to complete the selection process in a timely manner, the following time schedule must be strictly followed:
1. Appointment of the Lodge EGC must be made by November 1, 2007.
2. Material for the school must be delivered to the Public Schools by November 10, 2007.
3. Applications from the students must be returned to the school by March 30, 2008
4. The school must return the applications to the Lodge EGC no later than April 2, 2008.
5. The Lodge EGC must transmit all applications to the MCM EGC by April 6, 2008.
6. The MCM EGC will confirm and make all final decisions by May 1, 2008. The lodge will be notified as soon as possible after that date of any scholarships to be awarded.
Maintaining this schedule will allow a lodge to notify the recipient and set up an opportunity to present the scholarship at an Awards Assembly or graduation ceremonies. It is important that the school to which the student to attend be provided. The check will be issued jointly in the name of the student as well as the school.
The Lodge may increase the amount of the grant if they so desire. If any individual wishes to make a contribution to the EGP, should make it through MCM, a 501.C3 charitable corporation noted for the scholarship program. All donations to MCM are tax deductible.
