VIRUS & HOAX KNOW HOW

These days find those of us who regularly use computers on the Internet, are being deluged with Junk Mail. Much of it appears to be harmless but all of it affects us in one manner or another. Even the most innocuous, if nothing else, tends to slow the Internet down. We are besieged with advertisements, phony solicitations for someone in dire need, viruses and many, many scams.

Before automatically forwarding/sending an e-mail you just received from someone warning you of a virus, consider this:  Is it real or is this just someone creating a hoax to tie up you and the Internet unnecessarily?  Remember virus hoaxes slow down the Internet by having hundreds of thousands of people sending hundreds of thousands of emails to everyone in their address lists.  So how do you know if it is real?   Your first clue is a line in the message that urges you to send it to everyone on your address list as soon as possible.  Especially if this is repeated at the end of the message you can be almost sure it is a hoax.

Professional releases do not repeat themselves!

The next step is to take some time to investigate and see if what you are about to send to all your friends is real or not.  After all YOU should check out anything before sending a hoax or a scam to a friend and thus becoming a part of it AND involving your friends.

At least one of the following sites should be consulted before forwarding virus or hoax warnings. Most contain complete information files on hoaxes as well as viruses.
Click on any underlined titles below and your browser should take you to that site:

And suffice to say, if you don't have good virus protection software installed and update it at least weekly, you are placing your computer and data at great risk!
